The Benefits of Being a High School Teacher

The Good Side of High School Teachers

TeachingIf you are interested in a job in education but are uncertain of which grade level you would like to pursue, you might want to consider becoming a high school teacher. In fact, there are many benefits of being a high school teacher that are not enjoyed when working at the middle school or elementary school level.

One of the benefits of being a high school teacher is the fact that you get to work with older students. This is one of the benefits of being a high school teacher because older students are generally more mature than middle school or elementary level students. Therefore, many teachers find it to be more rewarding to work with students of this age because they get to see them transition into productive adults.

Another one of the benefits of being a high school teacher is that many high school teachers receive a prep period. During this prep period, you are provided time during the school day during which you can plan lessons, grade papers, and perform other tasks that are necessary to help your students become successful. In many school corporations, elementary teachers do not receive a prep period. While they may get time to themselves when they take their students to their “specials” classes, such as PE or music, this time is usually quite short. In addition, these classes generally do not meet every day and some teachers may have to teach these classes in their own rooms.

On of the other benefits of being a high school teacher is that the educational path you follow can help prepare you for a career as a college professor or other similar position. In addition, since you must become a bit of an expert on the subject matter, you may find that your skills are easily marketable for other jobs that you can pick up on the side to supplement your income or that you may decide to enter into fully later in your career.
