How To Become A Physical Education Teacher
A physical education teacher may work at the elementary or the secondary level. Regardless of the level at which the physical education teacher works, the basic premise behind the job remains much the same.
If you decide to become a physical education teacher, you will be responsible for teaching physical education to students. Often referred to as simply PE or gym, physical education includes teaching the students how to play different sports as well as how to work together as a team.
As a physical education teacher, you need to have a strong disciplinary program in place. Since students may be working with equipment that could potentially cause them to get hurt, a physical education teacher must set clear guidelines and expectations. The physical education teacher must also always be aware of what students are doing and must make sure they are engaging in physical activities in a safe manner.
In the past, a physical education teacher may have solely taught students how to play traditional sports games such as baseball, soccer, and basketball. Today, however, a physical education teacher may have a weight room in which the students routinely workout and may also have access to machinery such as treadmills and stationary bicycles.
As a physical education teacher, you will be expected to work with students of various levels of physical fitness. You might also need to work with special education students that have special restrictions and requirements. Therefore, your job as a physical education teacher will involve differentiating your activities in order to allow all students to be successful. You might also be called upon to individualize your grading system and to set goals for each individual student.
Once aspect of being a physical education is also to teach students how to properly care for their bodies and their health. Therefore, setting individualized goals is just one more way to help students understand their bodies and their own limitations. In addition, you might be called upon to teach health classes or may pair up with health and nutrition teachers in order to help them include physical education as a component of their class.
