In order to become a high school economics teacher, you will need to complete a minimum of four years of college in order to earn your bachelor's degree. When becoming a high school economics teacher in the traditional method, you will need to take coursework in teaching methods as well as on the subject of economics. In many cases, a person wishing to become a high school economics teacher will also need to take courses in other social studies related areas. In this way, he or she can work as a high school economics teacher while also being qualified to teach other subjects in the social studies area.
Some people can become a high school economics teacher even if they did not originally go to school to become a teacher. If they have an extensive background and education in business or in economics, they may be able to go back to school in order to work toward their teaching certification. In states that are experiencing a high school economics teacher shortage, for example, special programs may be in place that will allow you to convert your degree fairly quickly into one that will allow you to work as a teacher in your state.
When you do become a high school economics teacher, you will enjoy the same type of work environment and pay as any high school teacher. In most school corporations, you will teach anywhere from three to eight or more classes per day and will receive at least once class period that serves as your prep time. During your prep time, you can grade papers, prepare lessons, and perform other tasks that will help you with providing your students with the very best education possible.
After you become a high school economics teacher, you can also expect to receive the same rate of pay as any other high school teacher. The pay scale from which you will be paid will vary from one school corporation to the next, but the amount you receive will depend upon the amount of education you have and the number of years of experience you have as a teacher. Therefore, if you want to increase the amount of money you can earn as a high school economics teacher, you will need to return to school in order to work your way up the scale.
