Elementary school teacher education training is quite rigorous and involved. In fact, in order to work as an elementary school teacher, you will need to first earn a bachelor's degree and then successfully complete testing that has been developed by the state in which you wish to teach. Unlike most bachelor's degrees that can be earned in just four years, many students find that elementary school teacher education training actually can take up to five years of full time study to complete.
Elementary school teacher education training involves becoming a bit of an expert on a wide variety of subjects. This is because elementary teachers are generally called upon to teach all of the core subjects to their students, including math, language arts, social studies and science. In some school districts, the elementary teacher is also expected to teach the "specials" classes, which may include music, art, and physical education. Therefore, an elementary school teacher education training program will include coursework in all of these areas.
Although elementary school teacher education training involves becoming knowledgeable in all of these subject areas, the primary focus is on how to teach these subjects to students. For example, an elementary school teacher education training program may involve taking coursework in mathematics, but will also include taking classes on how to successfully teach mathematics to students at different developmental stages. Similarly, an elementary school teacher education training may include the typical coursework in literature and in writing, but will also include courses on how to teach reading and writing to elementary-aged children. These types of courses are typically referred to as “methods” courses within an elementary school teacher education training program.
Another important component of the elementary school teacher education training program is the student teaching component. When student teaching, the student actually takes over a classroom for a period of time while working beneath an experienced and skilled teacher. In this way, the student can get a true feel for what it is like to run a classroom while still getting assistance and guidance from a college supervisor and the teacher whose classroom is being used for the student teaching experience. This aspect of the elementary school teacher education training program may last only a few weeks or may last for up to a year depending upon school and state requirements.
