Duties of a Preschool Teacher
What Does A Preschool Teacher Do?
The duties of a preschool teacher are quite hectic and may change on a regular basis as the teacher works to meet the needs of each of her students. Although the general duties of a preschool teacher may involve meeting certain objectives on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis, the preschool teacher must also be flexible and capable of handling unexpected situations.
The main duties of a preschool teacher involve preparing the child for a success school career. As such, the duties of a preschool teacher generally involve teaching concepts that were once considered to be the duties of a kindergarten teacher. As educational demands continue to grow, the expectations for children entering kindergarten and first grade have also grown. Therefore, the duties of a preschool teacher involve helping the child be prepared to meet these expectations.
In order to help prepare the child for elementary school, the duties of a preschool teacher involve introducing the child to a variety of ideas and concepts. Primarily, the duties of a preschool teacher are to engage the child in active play that helps him or her formulate an understanding of the world. This can include learning basic science facts by exploring the five senses, exploring math and engineering by building blocks, or experimenting with language through song.
In addition to facilitating active play educational opportunities, the duties of a preschool teacher also involve facilitating more formal educational opportunities. For example, the preschool teacher may start teaching students how to write, how to count, and how to say the alphabet. The duties of a preschool teacher may also include helping the children learn about colors and other basics that will help them when they enter elementary school.
The duties of a preschool teacher also involve working with the student’s parents. By maintaining an open line of communication, the teacher and the parents can help the child achieve a high level of success in preschool and beyond.
