Becoming an elementary school teacher is not a particularly easy process, as it requires completing a great deal of school as well as passing rigorous state exams. In addition, after becoming an elementary school teacher, you will need to take continuing education courses in order to maintain your teaching license.
The first step necessary for becoming an elementary school teacher is to work toward earning your bachelor's degree. In most colleges, the first two years of your schooling will cover basic coursework and you will then need to get accepted into the School of Education, which is where you will then begin taking classes that will help you learn more about how to teach young children. You will need to successfully pass certain tests in order to move onto this next step for becoming an elementary school teacher.
As you work toward becoming an elementary school teacher, you will take courses that are referred to as "methods" courses. These courses will teach you how to teach virtually every subject area possible. After all, when you decide that becoming an elementary school teacher is right for you, you will also be deciding to become a bit of an expert in language arts, math, science, social studies, music, art, physical education, and so much more. At the same time, you need to know how to best teach each of these classes in a manner that young children can understand and enjoy.
The final step in becoming an elementary school teacher is to take a state examination. Through this examination, you will need to prove your knowledge in teaching as well as your abilities to listen and to communicate with others.
